Migraines with Aura
One of the symptoms that is less commonly seen in migraine sufferers is aura. This set of symptoms generally occurs before the onset of the migraine. It includes things like temporary vision impairment, flashes of light, and tingling feelings in the hands or face. It may also be accompanied by physical weakness. What causes this type of migraine?
The causes of migraines in general are still disputed, and why some people experience aura while others do not is also unknown. However, researchers are fairly certain that it has something to do with chemicals in the brain being suddenly released. The two in particular that seem to be connected to aura are dopamine and serotonin.
Treatment for Migraines with Aura
The good news is that treatment for migraines with aura is basically the same as treatment for a standard migraine. Since aura is also often experienced before a seizure, some physicians have prescribed anti-seizure medications for migraines. Also, antidepressants have been used as a treatment since these work to control the levels of the same chemicals that seem to be related to migraines. The problem with all medications prescribed for migraines is that they all have side effects and can lead to rebound headaches and a worsening of symptoms over time.

For those who are looking for drug free treatment of their migraines, many have turned to upper cervical chiropractic. This is a natural way to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency of migraines or eliminate migraine headaches completely. Since many migraines are a result of a misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Since these vertebrae can affect the brain stem and spinal cord, a misalignment can have far reaching effects on the body including migraine headaches.
