TMJ and Fibromyalgia

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) causes jaw pain, and it’s more common in people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome than it is in the general population. Although these 2 conditions do frequently go together they can exist separately. Most people with fibromyalgia have TMJ symptoms but not everyone with TMJ or jaw pain have fibromyalgia symptoms such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, sleep disorders, widespread body pain etc.

Whether you’re experiencing TMJ and fibromyalgia symptoms or experiencing TMJ alone, a common underlying cause is injuries to the head and neck.

Sherwood Chiropractic Helps TMJ and Fibromyalgia

Head and neck injuries can do a variety of things to our bodies. Frequently it starts with a tearing loose of the connective tissue that holds the spine in place. This allows the body to break down and lock into a stressed position. Once the head, neck, spine and rest of the body is in this unnatural position damage begins to be done.

For the jaw, head and upper neck position is crucial. The movement of the jaw relies on the position of the head and neck. If the head is tilted from its normal position even by as little as three quarters of a degree it can have an impact on the jaw.

With a jaw that is just slightly off from its normal position, every time you open your mouth to talk, chew, Jan etc. you are creating damage to the temporomandibular joint. This can lead to inflammation, clicking, popping and pain.

Rebalancing the position of the upper neck in order to restore proper alignment to the head, neck and rest of the spine leads to proper function at the jaw joint once again.

The most precise way to rebalance the upper neck is by utilizing the NUCCA system. This system allows the doctor to determine the precise angle to correct the misalignment and restore proper balance to the head, neck and spine. This procedure is so precise and gentle that unlike other approaches it relies on no forceful popping, cracking or twisting of the spine.

And because this upper neck focused approach has a direct impact on the brain stem and central nervous system the symptoms of fibromyalgia also frequently are connected to these upper neck misalignments caused by head and neck injuries.
