Medical professionals have a hard time understanding why migraines and headaches happen. However, researchers have revealed an interesting connection between headaches and a lack of proper communication in the brain. When a person is found to have a misalignment in the upper two bones of the vertebrae (the upper cervical neck), it puts undue pressure on the brainstem. The brainstem is responsible for communicating with the brain and body. The pressure on the brainstem hinders the proper flow of cerebral spinal fluid and blood. In turn, the brain cannot send the proper signals to the body.

Proven Migraine Facts
There was research done concerning two people that had both experienced whiplash. Because of this, they both were suffering from terrible migraines. Using an upright MRI machine, both patients were found to have a decrease in the flow of cerebral spinal fluid. Interestingly, the MRI also revealed that both patients had a misalignment in their atlas bone, which is the uppermost vertebrae in the neck. This was placing pressure on the brainstem causing the flow of cerebral spinal fluid to decrease resulting in a migraine.

Both patients were put under the care of an upper cervical chiropractor and received one adjustment. After being scanned again, it was noted that the cerebral spinal fluid had returned to normal flow. Their headaches also went away!
Additional research reveals that an interference in the spinal column is linked to intracranial pressure headaches and cerebral spinal flow. This can cause problems in other areas of the body, such as numbness, a pins and needles feeling in the body, neck pain, and a number of other symptoms. So, what can help?
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care
Chiropractors in this field address the root cause of migraines, the misalignment in the neck. Upper cervical chiropractors are trained to detect and then correct the problems of the upper neck. Once the atlas bone is realigned, cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow will return to normal. The body will once again be able to communicate properly, and a decrease in the intensity and number of migraines will hopefully be the end result.
