More than Ice
Icing your back and neck after you sustain a car accident, whiplash, sports-related injury, fall, or collision to your head is always a great idea, but that’s only the beginning of the healing process. Icing your injury is a great way to reduce any swelling in your back or neck, but that ice won’t realign any misalignments in your spine.
For that, you will need an upper cervical chiropractor to examine your upper neck vertebrae. If they find any misalignments in your upper neck, they will set you on a plan to receive adjustments, so as to address the underlying cause of your whiplash.
Whiplash and Vertigo
Various parts of your body depend on the proper flow of blood work properly, and a misalignment in your neck of only ¼ of a millimeter can alter the flow of blood from your brain to your body. This alteration in blood flow can cause several health problems, including vertigo, to arise.
When this condition results from whiplash, it is because the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation, is not functioning correctly. You may not think you will suffer from vertigo as a result of that accident, but the truth is that 25 – 50% of all people who suffer whiplash suffer from vertigo.
Now, it’s important to know that that whiplash may have begun as an injury to the neck, but it also caused an injury to the brainstem. That’s because that misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae causes pressure on the brainstem. That results in decreased cerebral blood flow in the posterior circulation of the brain.

Upper Cervical Care for that Vertigo
Now, we encourage you to ice your injury. Reducing the swelling will help the healing process, but we encourage you to go one step further. Call an upper cervical chiropractor, make an appointment, and allow them to examine your neck for any misalignments. They want nothing more than your healing, and for you to live a healthy life.
So, now you can listen to your friends and co-workers who tell you to just ice the injured area, or you can do that and then seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We know your friends and family mean well, but that car accident may have caused a ripple effect throughout your body. Ignoring the pain from your whiplash, could change your life for the worse if you do not take steps to address the underlying cause now.
