The story starts with a 25-year-old female who was suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension). Her findings were so incredible that the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research felt it necessary to share them.
She had been diagnosed with high blood pressure and was experiencing migraines twice a week. She was prescribed the drug hydrochlorothiazide. Unfortunately, this drug comes with some serious side effects, such as:
- Headaches
- Fever
- Nosebleeds
- Upset stomach
- Joint pain

Hypertension and Migraines
She began to seek an alternative method for her blood pressure by visiting an upper cervical chiropractor. Upon her initial exam, her blood pressure was 134/98 mmHg. It was determined that it was due to a misalignment in the vertebrae of the upper neck. This was confirmed using a specialized x-ray. The chiropractor then gave her a specific adjustment. She had follow-up visits that consisted of further assessment using Paraspinal thermography, postural evaluations, supine leg length assessments, and more blood pressure monitoring. She continued to get regular care over the next 12 weeks.
By week 12, her blood pressure had dramatically decreased to 114/80 mmHg. Her migraine headaches had become fewer in frequency and severity. All of this was done with no medications and no dangerous side effects. Just natural, safe adjustments. Similar research has been done at the Hypertension Center in Chicago and has also revealed positive effects on patient’s blood pressure after getting upper cervical adjustments.
The head weighs up to 14 pounds. It is balanced precisely over the spine and held in place by soft tissue. A misalignment in this area does not cause a significant amount of pain and can go on for months or even years without being detected or managed. Even though pain may not be present, serious damage could be happening throughout the body leading to all kinds of health conditions, including migraines.
Misalignments of the neck hinder blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid flow from entering and exiting the brain in proper amounts. This sets up the right environment for migraines to happen. By gently correcting the problem here, many have seen relief of migraines in only a couple of adjustments.
